StoryMoves

Program description

In this workshop, provided by the Van Wezel Education and Community Education Department and led by teaching artist, Deb Lombard, students discover the joy of reading through active listening and movement. Key vocabulary words are brought to life through exploration and movement creation – helping students gain (and retain) a deeper understanding of the words. Just like any good story, this workshop has a beginning, middle and end: To start, students are led through a creative movement warm-up, exploring key action words. Then, students create their own movements using words from the book. As the book is read aloud, students are encouraged to show off their words through movement. The day ends with a dance – connecting the students’ newly- created movements to music. This workshop is a great way to connect content, build literacy skills, promote reading, and spark creativity. Oh yeah, it’s also super fun!
