The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature

The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature

Located on downtown Bradenton’s waterfront, The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature is the largest natural history museum on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature offers engaging exhibits as well as educational programs which interpret the scientific and cultural knowledge of Florida, the world, and our universe. In addition to  the permanent exhibits, The Bishop features a constantly changing lineup of temporary exhibitions – offering something new to discover with each visit, featuring fossil evidence of Florida’s earliest animal inhabitants and archaeological materials representing Paleo-Indian, Archaic, and pre-contact cultures, as well as local history and creative exhibitions. The Museum also features an all-digital Planetarium and the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat. At The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, you can learn about the world around you – land, sky, and sea – through the lens of Florida’s natural sciences.

We are proud to offer schools a variety off-site and in-person educational experiences. Learn more about each option below in the Explorations section.

After school and during select school breaks, The Bishop has several public programs to expand science learning for all ages! Check out Science Camps, IQuest, Teen Nights, Science Sprouts, Tales Under the Tree, and more at our website.

The Nature of Science Classroom Outreach Program

Program description

If you can’t make it to The Bishop, or you want to extend your students’ learning with a pre- or post-field trip program, our Outreach Programs are a great way to bring the Museum’s resources directly to your group!

Our Classroom Outreach Programs are designed for small-group inquiry. Using Museum objects and activities, we deep-dive with your group into Museum-inspired topics.

We are always expanding our topic selection– let us know what you are looking for!

Currently available themes:

  • What is a Museum? – Why do we have museums? How does one get started? What is in a museum? What is a collection? Have you ever collected anything? Ask your museum expert all these questions and more! We will even bring some cool museum objects, like fossils and artifacts, to help us answer.
  • Our Solar System – What makes up our star system? Let’s learn more about the true size, scale, and structure of the Solar System through models and movement!
  • Manatees and their Environment – Learn about the elusive and mysterious mammal that is a favorite and staple of our Florida waters! Explore where manatees fit within our ecosystem, their diet and food behaviors, and how The Bishop performs our rehabilitation and care of manatees.
