The Sarasota Ballet

The Sarasota Ballet

“The Sarasota Ballet excels in providing such quality experiences not only for patrons and subscribers but also for young people.”

–  Brian Hersh

Ballet is an art form that touches us deeply and gives expression to feelings not easily put into words. For over thirty years, it has been the mission of The Sarasota Ballet to enrich lives, captivate emotions and strengthen the community through the art of dance. The Company is renowned for its breath-taking performances and visionary education programs. This exciting artistic force has achieved stature and recognition by following its intention to be a major resident and touring company presenting the highest quality of classical and contemporary dance.

The Sarasota Ballet’s community engagement division, Dance For All, is designed to provide meaningful opportunities for our community to experience and learn about ballet, cultivating and educating a new generation of lifelong arts advocates. Through our School Performances & Programs, our dancers and instructors engage students not only in the schools through interactive demonstrations and abbreviated performances, but also at the theater through special School Matinees.

Coppelia - In the Classroom: A Ballet Story Comes to Life

Program description

An interactive introduction to ballet and storytelling

Coppelia – In the Classroom

The Sarasota Ballet is delighted to announce two exciting Explorations for students utilizing the comedic E.T.A. Hoffman story of Coppélia.  These two Explorations can be done together or independently.

Coppelia – In the Classroom is the first part of our Fall Exploration series where The Sarasota Ballet School comes into elementary schools to conduct an interactive learning workshop about how a ballet comes to life.  The workshop combines informational teaching segments with live ballet demonstration and audience participation.  Dancers from The Sarasota Ballet’s Studio Company and The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory will illustrate as a narrator guides your students through the rich history of ballet, the formation of a dance characters, and interactive participation while learning about the humorous story of Coppélia.

This new program is open to students from Grades 3 & 4 and will involve educators and dancers coming into schools.  It could be presented at an assembly for all students, within an open classroom, or for specific school groups.

As a follow up to the In the Classroom Explorations, students are invited to attend our special School Matinée performances:  Coppelia – In the Theater at the Mertz Theater on the campus of Florida State University in Sarasota.   The School Matinees will be held October 23-25, 2023.  You can find details for The Sarasota Ballet’s Coppelia – At the Theater performances on EdExploreSRQ.  Seating is limited – book today!
