The Sarasota Ballet

“The Sarasota Ballet excels in providing such quality experiences not only for patrons and subscribers but also for young people.”

–  Brian Hersh

Ballet is an art form that touches us deeply and gives expression to feelings not easily put into words. For over thirty years, it has been the mission of The Sarasota Ballet to enrich lives, captivate emotions and strengthen the community through the art of dance. The Company is renowned for its breath-taking performances and visionary education programs. This exciting artistic force has achieved stature and recognition by following its intention to be a major resident and touring company presenting the highest quality of classical and contemporary dance.

The Sarasota Ballet’s community engagement division, Dance For All, is designed to provide meaningful opportunities for our community to experience and learn about ballet, cultivating and educating a new generation of lifelong arts advocates. Through our School Performances & Programs, our dancers and instructors engage students not only in the schools through interactive demonstrations and abbreviated performances, but also at the theater through special School Matinees.

"Coppélia" - FREE School Matinees and In-Classroom Workshops

Program description

Coppélia:  A comedic ballet brought to life for Sarasota’s 3rd & 4th Graders!  FREE Explorations

The Sarasota Ballet invites 3rd and 4th grade students to a theatrical dance education experience like no other.  This Fall, we bring back School Matinees where The Sarasota Ballet presents the humorous ballet,  Coppélia, as an interactive learning experience for our young audiences.  The Sarasota Ballet’s Coppélia School Matinées are led by an Emcee offering informational teaching segments guiding students through live performance segments and audience participation.

The Sarasota Ballet is excited to offer this year’s School Matinees for FREE to attendees.  Schools are asked to arrange transportation, but any school needing assistance with transportation is welcome to contact us directly.

School Matinée performances of Coppélia are held at the Mertz Theatre at the FSU Performing Arts Center in Sarasota.  Performances will be held October 25-27, 2023 and seating is limited – book yours today!

Teachers will have access to a Learning Guide developed by The Sarasota Ballet offering further insight into ballet history and fundamentals, the story of Coppélia, as well as fun handouts for the students that can be done in the classroom before and after attending the performance.

As a special bonus, The Sarasota Ballet is happy to come into your classroom before your students attend a School Matinee performance.   “Coppélia – In the Classroom” is an accompanying Exploration where The Sarasota Ballet comes into elementary schools to conduct an interactive learning workshop about how a ballet comes to life.  The workshop combines informational teaching segments with live ballet demonstration and audience participation.  Dancers from The Sarasota Ballet’s Studio Company and The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory will illustrate as a narrator guides your students through the rich history of ballet, the formation of dance characters, and interactive participation while learning about the humorous story of Coppélia.

Teachers interested in this additional FREE Exploration, “Coppélia – In the Classroom” should contact us ASAP.  “Coppélia – In the Classroom” is available Wednesdays – Fridays from Sept. 27 – Oct. 20, 2023.
