Jazzlinks - Bridging the Movement

Jazzlinks takes history off the page and makes it come alive! This collaboration between the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) and The Jazz Club of Sarasota is designed to educate high school and middle school students about the role of African Americans in U.S. history. Reflected through the songs and statements about the times, the program titled Civil Rights: Bridging The Movement, brings focus to the many contributions of African-Americans in the military and at home during WWII, the Korean, and the Vietnam Wars; taking us from the 1930s up to the 1960s. Come learn how circumstances and different musical styles influenced us all and helped further the dreams of a nation. Jazzlinks includes three arts-infused experiences: 1. Teacher Workshop: A remote Zoom gathering, enabling the review of standards-centered teaching materials including extensive Document Based Questions focused on WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War through primary sources, historical content, and music that illuminates the experiences of African Americans during these transitional times as they navigated the desegregation of the U.S. military. (See Document-Based Questions submitted with application for details.) WBTT will present the classroom session in the Teacher Workshop. 2. Classroom Session via Zoom: This method brings our actors into the classroom in the safest and most convenient way possible for your individual circumstances. Information about WWII is presented through text and music related to the historical events of the period. This format allows as many classes as desired to participate in order to enhance learning outcomes. 3. Live Campus Performance: The culminating in-person performance brings together a talented cast of performers in a new and vibrant presentation that highlights the events and music that helped shape societal changes during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, allowing for further exploration and understanding of the African-American’s contributions to the military throughout those years. Scheduling of this program: The teacher workshop will be conducted via Zoom connection on January 17, 2023 from 3:00-4:00 pm. The classroom sessions and Live performances will be available from January 23 - March 10, 2023.

Mother Goose on the Loose

Mother Goose flies in to present a fun-filled performance suitable for K-3. Performing as Mother Goose, teaching artist Laura Courter will spin yarns, present poems and have your students rolling in the aisles. Teachers may pick from a list of fairy tales or make suggestions of their own. Mother Goose is a Master storyteller enhancing oral traditions and integration of reading materials. Teachers can select the stories they would like presented from a list of old favorites, but are welcomed to make requests. Mother Goose is available to visit classrooms and even help with the students compose their own "Mother Goose Tale."

Sarasota Contemporary Dance: Triangle Program - Elementary

“Triangle” Three in One Dance Experience for Elementary Sarasota Contemporary Dance (SCD) is a unique dance company in that its performers and choreographers are also certified teaching artists. SCD recognizes that every student learns differently and that using movement as a vehicle to explore curriculum, encourage self-expression, and activate creativity in a school setting is important for learning and retaining information. This kind of exploration can be designed for students with varying levels of dance experience. The “Triangle” program is SCD’s most requested exploration, as it allows teaching artists to reach a large number of students in one session while offering a diverse learning experience. In the “Triangle” exploration, students of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to meet and dance with the dancers of SCD while they perform a short intro called “When I Dance.” The goal of the intro “When I Dance” is to share the basic elements of dance (what we call BEST): Body, Energy, Space, and Time. SCD has found that including the “When I Dance” introduction is an effective way for students to enter into a community together and feel engaged from the start. Afterwards, students will be split into three groups, and will transition into the “Triangle” program where they will experience three 15-minute rotations of dance genres, allowing an opportunity to learn from different teaching artists, and embody three different styles of movement and dance. This exploration will end with all students coming back together for a group sharing of the dance phrases taught in each rotation. This closing activity is an exciting experience for students to get to move in unison with the entire group.
