Slice of Art
Art Center Sarasota’s Slice of Art program was created in 2006 as an outreach program for art teachers in the public schools and in the summer to youth clubs and organizations that would benefit from the experience.
Over the last few years, when funding was available, teachers from the public schools and organizations reserve a date to come to the Art Center on a field trip. The tour funding provides a substitute teacher to the school so that the art teacher can accompany the students. A school bus is provided to transport the children.
The students, usually in a group of 15-30, tour the current exhibition in the art center lead by the education director. They discuss the art on display and are encouraged to form opinions on what they see both positive and negative. Peer to peer discussion among the students gives them an opportunity to speak freely and express their opinions on what they like or dislike and articulate reasons why. A pizza lunch is provided and after students get to create their own works of art influenced by the current exhibitions they just viewed and discussed or based on current lessons they are focusing on in class. This section is taught by one of Art Center Sarasota's artist instructors.
